Article Snippet: At the first Conference on Clinical Applications of the Ultrasonic Nebulizer, we presented data on our original studies on the output characteristics of an early model of the DeVilbiss Ultrasonic Nebu1izer.l This nebulizer aerosolized 4 to 10 ml of solution per minute depending on the output setting, a t a flow rate of 70.4 liters per minute, and produced a droplet mass with a median diameter of 7.7 to 9.6 microns.2 With the improvement of the DeVilbiss Ultrasonic Nebulizer and the availability of other ultrasonic nebulizers for further study, we extended our studies in this area.. The objectives of the present study were threefold: (1) To study the mechanical productivity of three selected ultrasonic generators with reference to: a ) capacity production (output), b) evaporative water loss, and c) droplet size distribution; (2) to determine the effects of ultrasonic nebulization on selected medications : a) an antibiotic (penicillin), b) a mucolytic agent (Mucomyst), and c) a steroid (cortisone); and (3) to study the clinical efficacy of ultrasonic nebulizers by subjective observations in patients with intractable asthma and cystic fibrosis (mucoviscidosis) . |
